How to Hold A Pencil

Learning to hold a pencil correctly can be tricky. Here are a few tips:

  • Make the OK sign
  • Practice opening and closing the "pincher fingers" (thumb and pointer finger)
  • Pick the pencil up by pinching it with the pincher fingers (remember only the pinchers can hold the pencil)
  • All the other fingers have to go inside (in lightly-closed fist)
  • The middle finger can creep out to help, but he can't pinch; he can support the underneath side of the pencil

Welcome to Kindergarten!

It has been an exciting beginning to the school year! We have been busy learning procedures, rules and building our classroom community. The beginning of the year starts out slow, but it is important that we spend the time building some independence and trust. We have a great class, and I look forward to a fun year of learning!

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.

All About Me

I have been at Oak Grove for eighteen years. I love being an All-star teacher. I feel blessed to have a job that I love! I grew up in Southern California and earned my degree and teaching credential at CSU, Fullerton. To further my education, I completed a graduate program through CSU, Fullerton and received a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in Reading and a Reading Language Arts Specialist Credential.

My daughter, Sarah, graduated from Humboldt State University. She loves to travel and is currently teaching in Thailand. In my free time, I like to listen to music, hike, read, cook and spend time outdoors. I spend a lot of time in northern California. I also like to hang out with my dog, Bella. I find pleasure in enjoying life's simple pleasures!

Home-School Connection

There are many ways you can reinforce the concepts that are learned at school. For example:

  • Practice reading/writing sight words and fluency phrases
  • Practice writing sentences using capitalization, punctuation, and descriptive words (adjectives)
  • Orally count by 1's, 2's, 5's and 10's
  • Practice math flash cards with sums and differences to 10
  • Practice number recognition to 120
  • Practice writing numbers to 120
  • Make up math story problems for your child to solve (using various objects they can manipulate)
  • Read to your child and ask comprehension questions before, during and after reading
  • Ask questions about the pictures in a book
  • Visit the library
  • Practice writing last name
  • Have your child explain their thinking
