LIBRARY

Our library day is FRIDAY  The children are able to check out one book per week.  The book may be kept at home or school.  Please be very careful with books as they are costly for families to replace.  Thanks to Mrs. Betancourt, Mrs. Marquez, and Mrs. Foster for helping!

Where in the World?

Both grades are working on mapping units for social studies.  We have had fun with songs, poems, and projects to help us better understand our place on the map.  I will let you know when the student's mapping folders are coming home to be able to review for a test to see how much we've learned. 

Fantastic Firsts and Spectacular Seconds!

Reading

We have some fabulous reading going on in Room 5!  Each week the children are reading independently, as a whole group, with buddies, with parent helpers, and of course with Mrs. Higgins.  We have been working in depth with our stories....

**providing evidence from the text to support our opinions, thoughts, and answers.

**making inferences-coming to conclusions from information we have read or seen

**learning new vocabulary to help us better understand the story as well as use in other areas

**reading stories multiple times to increase fluency and comprehension

 

Writing

Our class has been working on both narrative and informational writing.  For narrative writing, the children recount about an experience they have had.  Informational writing involves writing texts which name a topic and include some details and an ending.

Goals for first trimester:

*1st grade - Writes a sentence with 3 to 5 words and attempts capitalization and punctuation.

*2nd grade - Writes multiple sentences, using words to signal event order, and attempts closure.  Capitalization and punctuation should be evident.

Computer Lab

The children are continuing to do a fantastic job working in the computer lab. The kids are gaining so much knowledge!!! To log in from home, access the Oak Grove Website, click on Students, Student Links, and log in to CLEVER.  Here is where they will find the programs offered through CUSD.  So far we have used Ticket to Read, Fast Math, and ST Math (JiJi).  We will even begin to take math tests on the computer!

Numbers and Words

We have some pretty fluent mathematicians when it comes to addition and subtraction facts.  That is fantastic!  We are also learning to talk about math.  We have observed series of numbers to find out patterns and make connections.  We are dissecting math word problems to really understand them and be able to explain what's going on in each situation.  Finally, we are writing our own math word problems!

 

If you're looking for some other related math activities.....being able to identify and count coins and tell time on an analog clock are good skills to have.

HOMEWORK

Homework has been looking great!  Just a few notes....

 

*Be sure to have it in on time.  Being responsible is a great behavior trait to have.

*I enjoy seeing what has been read.  Please log your minutes and add them up.  The top five readers each month will soon be earning some fun awards!

***1st should be reading a minimum of 1 hour per week.

***2nd should be reading a minimum of 1 hour and 20 minutes per week.

*Remember to complete the Stretch your Thinking problems in math.

*Complete all homework in pencil.

 

*Behavior charts are to be signed and returned each Friday.  Those that are getting them back on time are earning tickets toward a trip to the prize box!  Super!
